Starting with haptic communication.
Accessible design is good design.
Computers should be engaging, convenient, and intuitive.
Technology should augment reality, not distract from it.
We provide more than an ordinary tap or vibration — we’ve created a haptic platform that delivers information to you through rich tactile patterns that move across your skin, allowing us to animate your sense of touch.
We can use touch as a new channel of communication to make information more accessible and intuitive, allowing anyone to be more engaged with the world around them.
Our first product, Moment, is the first wearable that uses precise haptic feedback to change your perception of time, improve your sense of direction, and help you stay more present. Moment turns information into intuition.
Instead of replicating the abilities of a smartphone in a smaller form, Moment is meant to augment them.
The skin is an amazingly good user interface to the human sensorium [...] to use it as an input device to the human being makes perfect sense.
CEO & Co-founder
Prior to founding Somatic Labs, Shantanu spent eight years researching haptic technology and assistive technologies for individuals who are blind or visually impaired at Arizona State University and as a 2014 Thiel Fellow. His published research focuses on translating visual and auditory information into tactile stimulations felt on a person’s back.
CPO & Co-founder
Jake has a background in computer science and electrical engineering. He brings extensive software expertise from his experience both founding Korkboard, a digital event bulletin for college campuses, and developing calibration embedded systems and testing software for Spectral Instruments.
CTO & Co-founder
Ajay has a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Arizona State University. His academic and research background is in neural signal processing and computational neuroscience. Ajay also developed a haptic interface for sports training and rehabilitation while at ASU.
